So for those of ya’ll who care…here’s me on BBC Radio
I cant believe how tacky I am sometimes. And they’ve actually gone and included it. By god, I wanna die of embarassment!
Although there are some things which I don’t agree with. The intervention, as Jasmeen said, wasn’t about Adam Teasing, or turning the tables. It was about reclaiming space, making the street our own.
Something a teacher said sometime back struck me. Feminity is all about access. Access to space, access to things so far restricted to us. I can’t help but agree. It seems to bringing down something as ‘noble’ as ‘fighting for equality’ down to its bare essentials but really, it is all about access. Throws a whole new spin on it doesn’t it?
Would I call myself a feminist? Yeah probably. And did I find that intervention helpful? Indeed I did. There’s something ‘empowering’ about standing on the street and actually experiencing it, as opposed to using it as a mere transition tool - from house to house, or shop to shop, or wherever it is we’re going. I’m suddenly tempted to try and apply Cavafy’s Ithaka to the street. How many of us take the time to enjoy the journey, so determined we are to get to the goal. The street is a marvellous place…but something which has, undoubtedly, been denied to us.
My pact to myself, post Blank Noise. Make eye contact with everyone. Slow down while walking. Chin up. Body loose. Why should I be embarassed for being who I am?
